Planning for the Pan Am Games
International athletic events bring global attention and prestige to the host country. They also bring huge crowds, tremendous traffic congestion and transportation problems.
The Pan Am Games will be held July 10 through July 26, 2015 and the ParaPan Am Games (paralympics) will be held June 26 through August 15 in Toronto. They will be the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in Canada, twice the size of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The games will cause road closures, lane restrictions and increased congestion on roads throughout the greater Toronto area, Hamilton and Niagara Region.
We are proud and excited that this area will be host to these major events, but we encourage shippers to be aware of the resulting delays and plan your transportation needs accordingly. Expedited shipping options do not, unfortunately, offer a workaround since those vehicles use the same routes as our standard delivery options.
To partially offset the higher costs created by the greatly congestion, there will be a $30 Pan Am Games Surcharge per shipment in the affected areas. Please reference Tariff 100 updates here. The surcharge will be in effect beginning June 22, when competitors, observers and event staff begin arriving for setup and training. The surcharge expires August 21 following the end of the ParaPan Am Games.
Congratulations to Canada as the host country and best of luck to the over 6,000 participants traveling here from around the world.
