Airman Flies in to Visit Father
We don't often expect visitors while we're on the job, but Akron, OH City Driver David Sanner got an unexpected--and very welcome--visitor when his daughter Lydia, a brand-new Airman First Class in the Air Force Reserve, showed up to see him at the terminal.
What made it a special surprise was the fact that she had just completed three months of military training at Fort Lee, VA.
"We do lots of big things to help and support our veterans," explained Rich Zelovic, Akron Weight and Inspection Coordinator.
"That includes our support for the Hiring Our Heroes program. But it's often the little things that remind us about the special plan we hold in our hearts for servicemen and women. This father-daughter reunion was one of those."
Fall Safe Driving Tip: Don't Veer for Deer
Fall brings an increase in deer activity. It's their time for migrating and mating.
Watch for darting deer, especially at dusk. If you encounter an animal, slow down, brake to avoid an impact but do not swerve.
Swerving can confuse animals so they don't know which way to run.
Swerving can also take you into oncoming traffic or cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
Be alert--they usually travel in groups.

2015 NTDC Wrap-Up
On August 11-15, 2015 the America's Center in St. Louis housed 431 of the nation's very best professional drivers as well as over 2,000 family members and friends for the 2015 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) hosted by the American Trucking Associations (ATA). This year marked the event's 78th anniversary!
At the end of the national competition, Holland professional driver Scott Donaldson secured a Top 5 finish in the 4-axle category. Scott qualified to compete at NTDC after finishing first in the 4-axle category at the 2015 GA Truck Driving Championships. He was part of the 7-man Holland team who took home the "Large Team Award" at the 2015 GA state competition.
Scott has been driving professionally for 29 years and has driven for Holland over the past 16 years. He works as a linehaul driver out of our Atlanta, GA service center, logging around 700 miles per week on a route through NE GA. On the road 5 days a week, Scott racks up about 28,000 miles every month.
The drivers who qualify for NTDC have achieved an impressive feat in and of itself--drivers must be safety conscious and collision-free for an entire year to compete at state level, then earn the championship of their class at state level to make it to NTDC.
We would like to also congratulate Holland NTDC competitor, Russ Simpson (Columbus, OH), for his strong and skillful showing in the Tanker class. This was his third time to compete at the national level, having participated in the NTDC in 2008 and 2013.
Widely referred to as the "Super Bowl of Safety," the NTDC is the premier stage for competitive truck driving. Professionals put their skills and knowledge to the test against the best of the best drivers in the field.
As ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said, "All the competitors who took part...are champions...of safety on our highways and of our industry's image."
We at Holland feel that honor extends to all of the dedicated professionals who took part in state competitions this year. A total of 71 Holland professional drivers competed this year from 14 states. Team Holland took home a total of 9 top-three trophies from 4 different states and 3 Team Awards! Team Holland has collected 69 top-three TDC trophies since 2004.
We would like to thank all of our hardworking and dedicated Holland professionals who participated this year. Your commitment to safety makes Holland a better company and our highways safer for everyone. We look forward to 2016!

By Way of the Highway with Diana Hergert
Diana Hergert, Holland professional linehaul driver at our Jackson, MI terminal remembers how she decided to become a truck driver. "I was having a mid-life crisis. It was time for a change. At first I thought Accounting would be a good job choice, but that is the classic desk job with a boss sitting nearby. I wanted more independence and adventure, so I looked into trucking."
And there was no looking back! Diana has now been a truck driver for 18 years and has driven for Holland for almost 4 of those years. "It has been an adventure from day one," Diana recalled. "Learning to backup...learning to go up mountains...an adventure!"
Diana made herself a promise when she became a truck driver, "I was determined I was going to be one of the best. It's what I do. I enjoy it."
When asked if she would encourage other women to drive for Holland, Diana answered enthusiastically, "Yes, I would definitely encourage women to drive for Holland. It's a very good place to work. The benefits are good. It's a rewarding job at the end of the day. It makes me feel great about me."
