It honors all fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers and father figures.
Holland Driver's Military Training Kicks In
Sometimes mechanical devices just don't cooperate.
When Holland City Driver Phil Altherr backed into the dock at a Troy, MI-based maker of solid-state LED lighting, the customer's receiving people were experiencing trouble.
"The dock plate wouldn't go down, so while one of their people held the lip of the plate, another employee tried to get it to budge," recalled Phil.
And budge it did... dropping suddenly and smashing the employee's foot causing serious injury.
Someone produced a first aid kit and Holland City Driver Phil Altherr took charge of the situation.
"I guess my military training kicked in," he said. "I recalled my advanced field first-aid skills and went to work."
Some people might have been afraid to help or simply stood back... but that's not how Holland professional driver Phil Altherr operates.
"I treat other people how I would like to be treated."
Summer Driving Tip: Share the Road
Warmer weather attracts many types of drivers including motorcyclists.
While motorcyclists have the same rights, privileges and responsibilities as every motorist, they are more vulnerable without the protection of a car or truck.
Leave more distance between you and a motorcycle--3 or 4 seconds worth.
Motorcycles are much lighter than other vehicles and can stop in much shorter distances.

Our New Grand Rapids, MI Terminal Soon to Begin Operations
Our new Grand Rapids, MI terminal is slated to be open for business mid-to-late July 2015. The new 55,000 square-foot service center with its additional 17,000 square-foot maintenance building will provide larger and greatly improved dock and vehicle-service space. This new service center will enable Holland to more effectively serve its current customers and accommodate the increasing demand for services both in the SW MI market and the entire Holland network spanning NE USA.
"Building a completely new facility like this is a challenging project, but through the dedication of all involved, we can look forward to beginning operations soon," said Scott Ware, Holland President.
Marc Weir, Grand Rapids Terminal Manager shared, "Our Grand Rapids team has been doing a great job of serving customers and maintaining our industry-leading record of safe, on-time delivery. Our larger, more modern facility will help employees work more efficiently and enable us to better grow our business. We will be in a great position to provide new customers throughout our service area with the unmatched next-day service that is a key part of the Holland Difference."
Ground was broken for the new facility (located six miles south of the current terminal) on December 19, 2014. This less-congested area will improve traffic flow. The land and facility design offer great potential for future growth.

It's State Truck Driving Competition Time!
At Holland, we are proud to celebrate our safety champions.
Did you know?
- A professional driver must be collision-free for an entire year to compete at his/her state truck driving competition
- To qualify for the National Truck Driving Championships, a professional driver must place first in his/her class at the state truck driving competition
- State and national truck driving competitions include: driving skill tests, maneuvering tests, pre-trip inspection, and a written exam on vehicle operations and federal safety regulations
Each summer our collision-free champions participate in state truck driving competitions (TDCs). This year a total of over 75 Holland safety superstars will participate at 14 state TDCs.
We are proud to share:
- Scott Donaldson, Atlanta city driver, earned 1st place at the GA State TDC in the 4-Axle class
- Russ Simpson, Columbus city driver, earned 1st place at the OH State TDC in the Tanker class
Scott and Russ are headed to the "Super Bowl" of truck driving competition--the National Truck Driving Championships--in St. Louis, MO on August 11-15 at the America's Center Convention Complex.
And there are more states holding TDCs with more Holland drivers competing at their state championships in the coming weeks!

By Way of the Highway with Lisa Treadway
Most people take a job for the potential income... and some people choose a job because it's something they love.
For Holland City Driver Lisa Treadway, it was a combination of the two.
Lisa got interested in driving as a career when a friend of hers with 20 years behind the wheel described his job. What sealed the deal was a look at his W2 form.
It wasn't just the opportunity to make a better living that encouraged Lisa to become a truck driver, though. "I have always liked to drive, so I decided to go to school and get my Commercial Driver's License... and that's just what I did!"
Lisa admits there was only one other woman in her class, and she quit part-way into the program. Lisa says sticking with the course was the right thing for her to do, and it's worked out great because that was a major step toward her career at Holland.
"I think it's a good thing for women to get behind the wheel," Lisa says. "The people at Holland are great. They are willing to help you. They treat you with respect. You're doing the same things that men do. We get on forklifts and we lift those heavy loads."
Lisa is doing a job she enjoys and making a nice living, "I like the benefits, the people and the company in general. I would recommend that other women drive for Holland. It's a good company."
