28 Years of Award-Winning Service
There are few measures as meaningful to us at Holland as the feedback of our customers and fellow industry professionals. That's why we were so proud to learn that we have received three 2013 Quest for Quality Awards from Logistics Management magazine.
The awards were in three separate categories: Midwest/Mid-Atlantic Regional Motor Carrier, South/South Central Regional Motor Carrier, and Expedited Motor Carrier.
This marks the 28th consecutive year that Holland has won at least one Quest for Quality Award, and the 6th consecutive year in the Expedited category.
Quest for Quality Award winners are determined by the readers of Logistics Management magazine--a group made up of logistics, transportation, and supply-chain professionals, customers, and shippers from around the country. Carriers are rated across these service and performance measures: on-time performance, value, customer service, information technology and equipment/operations.
“The Quest for Quality Awards are the gold standard of performance excellence in this industry,” said Holland president Scott Ware. “We accept these with the utmost pride and appreciation. An even greater gratitude goes out to the thousands of dedicated, skilled, hardworking Holland professionals who've made this possible. In every one of our service centers and offices, on every single dock, in every single truck, the very best men and women in the industry give their all every day to maintain the levels of excellence that make the Holland difference.”

That “no muss no fuss” service also holds true in Indiana. Did you know 75% of the U.S. population resides within one service day of Indianapolis? It's a popular consolidation/distribution spot and home to one of our largest facilities.
In the state of Wisconsin, Holland has the largest pickup and delivery areas and provides greater next-day reach than our competition. Our Wisconsin facilities lead the company with the lowest claim ratios.

Holland Helps Clothe the Homeless
On July 25th, Holland lent a helping hand by providing free shipping for a charitable donation made by our valued customers at Jostens. Jostens--the national leader in graduation materials, class rings and more--had excess clothing inventory they wanted put to good use. With an interest in helping the needy, Jostens coordinated the donation of their extra stock to the Nashville Rescue Mission in downtown Nashville, TN.
Jostens reached out to Holland Account Executive Daryle Barnes of our Nashville service center, and asked if Holland could assist in delivering the charitable shipment. Mr. Barnes turned to Nashville Service Center Manager, Barry Coffey. Mr. Coffey was happy to help, and gave Daryle the thumbs up to provide free shipping for Jostens and their donation.
Holland professional driver, Roger Beatty, made the pickup at Jostens the morning of the 25th and brought the load to the Holland Nashville service center. From there, Holland professional driver, James Ethridge, took the cargo in his trailer and made the delivery to the Nashville Rescue Mission. The final delivery consisted of 15 skids and weighed a total of 8,436 pounds.
Rescue Mission employees were present to unload the cargo, while Roger Beatty assisted with the pallet-jack. The donated clothing will be distributed to the patrons of the Nashville Rescue Mission--primarily homeless people and impoverished families.
“In assisting with this delivery we have not only helped people in need, but we’ve also connected with the Nashville community. We thank Jostens for their generous gift, and the Nashville Rescue Mission for its continued service to the needy,” said the president of Holland, Scott Ware.

Safety Superstars Make Holland Proud at 2013 National Truck Driving Championships
Last week August 20-24, the most skilled, safety-dedicated drivers in the nation squared off at the 2013 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT to test their skills behind the wheel and their knowledge of trucking.
Their skills were tested by navigating challenging obstacle courses, while their knowledge on subjects such as safety standards, equipment, and the trucking industry were evaluated by detailed written exams.
To qualify for the national competition, each driver had to win first place in their class at state competitions. Drivers were also required to remain accident-free, regardless of fault, for the entire year leading up to, and throughout the championships, in order to qualify.
As a result, those who compete at NTDC are truly the “best of the best.” Known throughout the industry as the “Super Bowl of Safety,” the NTDC showcases the most talented of our nation’s professional drivers. Just qualifying is a profound achievement.
This year, among the 422 elite competitors were four Holland professionals: Russ Simpson (Columbus, OH) 5-Axle; Jim Looks (Grand Rapids, MI) Tanker; Marty Blandford (Jeffersonville, IN) 5-Axle; and Bruce Renton (Grand Rapids, MI) Straight Truck.
Russ Simpson, a veteran driver and competitor has been driving professionally for 27 years, 21 of those years with Holland, and participating in competitions for the past 5 years. He operates as a city driver in Columbus, OH and is the Ohio 5-axle champion.
Jim Looks has been a part of Team Holland for 18 years. He operates as a linehaul driver out of the Grand Rapids, MI service center. Jim only began participating in competitions in 2010, but he had already earned a previous trip to the nationals. Jim is the Michigan tanker division champion.
Marty Blandford, Holland city driver since 1992, earned his place at NTDC with a first place win in the Indiana 5-axle class. Marty has been honing his safety skills for over 21 years with 9 first place state wins, 4 second place wins, 2 thirds, and 1 fourth. This year marked Marty's ninth trip to NTDC, and he is already setting his sights toward the 2014 competitions.
Bruce Renton, city driver and dockworker at the Holland Grand Rapids service center, is the MI Straight Truck division champion and also the 2013 National Truck Driving Championships Rookie of the Year! Congratulations Bruce! A Gulf War veteran, Bruce has racked up over 900,000 accident-free miles!
All Team Holland safety representatives were part of something that few will ever have the chance to experience.
Check out our NTDC facebook photo album to share some of the highlights.
We here at Holland would like to share our utmost pride and gratitude in all of our drivers who participated at local and state truck driving safety competitions and especially to Russ, Jim, Marty and Bruce for the hard work and dedication given in order to reach such levels of excellence. Go Team Holland!

Celebrating the Employees Who Make a Great Company Great (I am Holland)
If you ask around the Worthington, MN facility about Holland professional driver, Michael Lyon, it won't take long before you realize he's a man with many friends. Be it management, fellow drivers and dockworkers, account execs or customer service representatives, Michael Lyon is universally liked, appreciated and respected.
Mike has worked as a city driver and dockworker out of the Worthington service center since its opening some 14 years ago. In those years, he has proven himself to be a truly exceptional team member. According to Worthington Service Center Manager, Hans Vinge, Michael is “a class act and a pleasure to work with.”
“Michael personifies what it is to be a complete professional,” Hans continued. “I can say it is an honor to work with and beside him. Everyone can look to him as a model for work ethic and personal conduct.”
Despite the accolades, Mike is not the type to seek rewards and recognition. He is motivated by a profound commitment to performing a job well, and to living the Holland core values: integrity in all relationships; respect for individuals; excellence in all areas; and hard work.
“If we as Holland employees follow the core values, add a friendly smile, and do what we can to help our customers get their shipments in a timely and damage-free manner, then we can go home each night knowing we did our jobs,” said Mike.
In addition to his role as a driver, Mike is also a driver trainer at Worthington. Outside of Holland, he is a firefighter, training officer and EMT for his volunteer fire department in Sherburn, MN; as well as a husband, father of three, youth softball coach, and Sunday school teacher.
As you can see, Mike is a man whose commitment to service is immense. Mike is just one example of the people that make Holland the industry-leader in next-day, regional LTL.
