Spring driving tip #2: Pollen, posies, and potholes

Don't forget spring's lesser-known pseudonym--"Pothole Season."

Potholes can give you a flat tire, and even throw your car out of alignment.

Slow down, but do not hold the brake when passing over the hole.

Instead, allow the car to roll over it slowly to lessen the force of the impact.

Spare your car and your safety, by navigating spring's nasty road conditions the right way!

Spring walking tip #2: Provide your own light at night

The warmer spring weather makes the prospect of an evening stroll much more appealing.

But remember to remain visible at night.

Wear bright, reflective clothing, and always carry a flashlight--both to light your way, and to alert motorists of your presence.

See, be seen, and stay safe this spring!

Bringing spring in full bloom

In his 22 years at Holland, Chattanooga linehaul driver, James Good, had never seen such a sight--a trailer full of live trees!

Soil and all, what a surprise it was; and what a pleasant reminder that spring has sprung.

With Holland behind the helm, these leafy travelers arrived safely, to settle their roots on a sunny spot called home.

Being the best at the border

Holland doesn't just follow the rules--it sets the bar in cross-border compliance.

Holland participates in a number of voluntary programs that work to smooth the border-crossing process and increase security.

C-TPAT, FAST, CSA, and PIP certification means that Holland shipments spend less time at the border, and are subject to fewer inspections.

What that means for you is better on-time, claim-free service to and from Canada.

99% on-time delivery. 99.8% of shipments clearing customs without issues.

An average crossing time of 3 minutes per shipment . . . that's how Holland does cross-border business.

What's New at Holland

Care makes Holland service better

Dawn Stone feels she does what is expected for Joshua Wolf of M.E. Dey Cargo Corp., an international freight forwarder and customs broker based in Atlanta, GA.

Care makes Holland service better"I simply strive my hardest to provide great customer service," she says. "That's what customers expect."

It's customer service Joshua cannot get anywhere else. Joshua gave all his business to Holland after just his second interaction with Dawn, who is a pickup clerk at the Holland terminal in Romulus, MI.

Joshua said, "I switched my business to Holland as a direct result of Dawn and Holland's great service."

What prompted the switch? Dawn explained, "The customer told me that in his experience there are many carriers that just don't care anymore. He liked that even though he is not our biggest customer, we still provide excellent service for him."

Behind the care Dawn gives to M.E. Dey Cargo and other Holland customers is nearly 26 years of experience. "I've worked every shift and done every job except payroll," she said.

Freight forwarders like M.E. Dey Cargo have unique needs, explained Dawn. "Their international freight needs to be picked up direct from the airlines' cargo facility. Our drivers need to bring a copy of a U.S. Customs release when picking up the freight. I make sure I communicate these requirements to the Holland team," said Dawn.

"All of us at Holland make sure everything is done properly, so they come back to us. We want to make it easier for them, especially because shipping internationally is so hard," she said.

An unwavering commitment to the success of every customer drives every Holland employee.

"We care and do our jobs right," says Dawn.

Capacity keeps pace with customer demand

Capacity keeps pace with customer demand
As the economy turns upward, shippers are increasingly turning to Holland for extensive next-day coverage and timely, damage-free deliveries.

Holland is ready to help customers speed their goods to the marketplace. In anticipation of increasing volumes, we have been adding drivers and equipment to the fleet to alleviate the capacity constraints found throughout the industry.

Drivers are one of the key contributors to our award-winning on-time service. Last year we hired over 700 drivers, and we anticipate hiring an equal number or more this year. In fact, Holland has hired almost 115 city and 50 linehaul drivers in March and April alone.

Our high standards put the best-qualified drivers behind the wheel. We look for drivers who are skillful with the equipment, have the utmost regard for safety, and possess the personal characteristics of courtesy and commitment to customer satisfaction

We are using innovative approaches to recruitment along with traditional hiring practices to support customers' supply chains and their clamor to find transportation providers that can handle their business volume.

The dock-to-driver program develops drivers internally. Scouting events are held on weekends and late evenings.

Holland needs drivers

In addition to print advertising, job fairs and word-of-mouth referrals, Holland is using Twitter, email, job boards and other online sources to reach candidates.

Not all drivers make the grade. However, the increase of our driver pool is a testament to the quality reputation we have among candidates.

To keep pace with customers' business growth, we also are bringing more equipment into service. So far this year:
--Over 100 tractors have been added
--Over 450 trailers have been added

As more customers experience the quality service that the Holland team delivers every day, our volumes continue to build. We are working hard to make sure that our customers' choice of Holland is the best choice they can make.

Holland's multi-award-winning performance

 Holland's multi-award-winning performance
When it comes to measuring performance, there is no yardstick more significant than the evaluations of our valued customers.

That's why we couldn't be happier to announce that in the past month Holland has received two prestigious awards from two separate customers.

First, GlobalTranz, a leading logistics management firm specializing in carrier, supply chain and warehouse management, named Holland its 2011 Central LTL Carrier of the Year. And second, Eastman Chemical Company, a leading manufacturer of chemicals, fibers, and plastics, has awarded Holland its 2011 Supplier Excellence Award . . . for the sixth consecutive year! Both groups evaluated carriers on a number of critical performance metrics to determine award recipients.

Categories for evaluation included but were not limited to: on-time percentages, billing accuracy, claims ratios, safety/security incidents and nonconformance, driver courtesy, and customer service.

"We are honored to be recognized with these awards from our valued customers at GlobalTranz and Eastman Chemical Company," said Jim Ferguson, vice president of sales and marketing for Holland.

 Holland's multi-award-winning performance
"Holland professionals work hard to provide the level of service necessary to remain regional LTL leaders, and we are grateful to be honored for those efforts. We look forward to many more years working with these customers, and hope to earn many more awards in the future."

When it comes to quality service, there are many variables to account for, and as the awards keep rolling in, it's clear that Holland has the bases covered.

Safe, compliant, on-time, and claim-free next-day shipping with attentive customer service experts to guide the way--it might be a mouthful, but that's excellent shipping. That's Holland!

The drive to be safer

 The drive to be safer
The knowledge that just one accident or injury can impact a life or lives forever drives our efforts to improve safety at Holland. Safety policies and practices are not special projects but are the way Holland does business every day.

Safety enables Holland employees to meet commitments to customers and to return home to their families. All Holland drivers are encouraged to use driving competitions as a way to sharpen their safe driving skills.

The top finishers at local contests qualify for their state's competition. Winners at the state level advance to the national competition. This year the National Truck Driving Competition is August 7-11 in Minneapolis, MN.

Holland drivers from GA and NC competed against the top drivers from their respective states May 11-12.

And the results?

Herschel Evans took first place in the 5-axle and won the GA Driver of the Year awardSean Bates earned second place and was honored with the Rookie of the Year award.

Scott Donaldson earned third place in 5-axle flatbed, and James Bowman earned third place in 3-axle.

All competitors were city drivers from the Holland facility in Atlanta, except for Todd Singleton, who drives from Chattanooga.

Roger Couch (straight truck), Albert Epperson (4-axle), Charles Essex (5-axle), Michael Gaskins (tank), Stephen McConley (twin trailers), Todd Singleton (5-axle), and James Yates (4-axle) also participated.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

Billy Lomax, terminal manager (Indianapolis, IN), is a man of action. For three years, the 2012 "I Am Holland" award winner has led Holland's efforts to help distribute standardized tests to all schools, grades K-8, in Indiana.

 "I am Holland" Billy Lomax
Billy works closely with Holland's customer, Langham Logistics, to orchestrate precise logistics services complementing Langham's total program offering. The strategic partnering, planning and execution have led to a two-year contract extension with Langham Logistics.

Each year, Holland's role begins with picking up blank tests from the publisher in Waterloo, IA, and delivering them to the schools. Four weeks later--after the students have completed the tests--Holland picks them up from each school.

"The pickups and deliveries must be made through educational administrators who normally don't handle shipping and receiving," explains Holland area director of operations Rick Sheets.

To make it seamless for the schools, Billy creates binders with checklists for the drivers. Included are key points such as who to ask for upon arrival and how to stack cartons on the skid.

"The trickier part of the project involves all the tests coming back into the Indianapolis terminal, consolidating the loads, and delivering them to Langham by 4am the next day," Billy explains.

"Billy is able to provide Langham with real-time information on how we are progressing on that specific day. There have been zero failures of any kind," notes Rick.

"It's just a phenomenal effort on Billy's part to orchestrate the whole thing. And, then to provide the leadership, and to stay on top of it."

Billy is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to Holland.

Highlighting how trucking affects our lives,
And the people who make it happen

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, on a typical day in the United States about 32 million tons of goods valued at 25.2 billion dollars move via trucks on our nation's highways.

Here at Holland, we understand that at the core of those statistics are real, hardworking people--people who climb into a truck cab every day to keep America's gears turning. That's why we have created our new series "By way of the highway"--to honor the people who transport the goods we need to survive.

Holland linehaul driver, Jesse Harren
(l, r) Jesse Harren receives his one million mile awards (jacket, plaque, truck decal) from Ken Fox, terminal manager, Minneapolis, MN
Holland linehaul driver, Jesse Harren (Minneapolis, MN), is the type of driver that was born to man a big-rig. Jesse's father drove trucks for 46 years before retiring, and his two brothers have been truck drivers for as long as Jesse himself.

But truck driving isn't simply something he does because it runs in the family--with 24 years of trucking under his belt, Jesse Harren always has, and still loves what he does.

"To put it simply, it's just enjoyable--you get to be out on the open road and see a lot more of the country than most people. It's a great way to make a living."

With a schedule that gets him into the terminal five nights a week at 9:30pm, sends him 230 miles to Aimes, IA, and then another 230 miles on to Kansas City, there's no doubt about the fact that Jesse works hard.

"I have been on nights for 24 years, and because my wife works days as a school teacher, it can be difficult. But my family has always been supportive, and these past 14 years with Holland have been the best of my career."

"Holland is far better than the competition. Great equipment, great performance, and most of all, great people are what make us the best."

And Jesse himself certainly helps us be the best. Jesse was recently awarded for reaching one-million-miler status--an elite honor reserved for drivers who have racked up one million consecutive miles of accident-free driving. Jesse was honored with a one-million-miler jacket, award, and decal for his truck.

"This has been one of the biggest highlights of my career. Holland appreciates what their people do, and it's nice to be acknowledged in this way. I'm looking forward to the 2-million-miler award."

And we're confident that day will come. With safety-dedicated drivers like Jesse on our team, we're also confident that Holland will remain the regional leader in on-time, damage-free, next-day service.

Let drivers like Jesse handle your cargo, and be confident in knowing you're in safe hands.
