Wahmhoff Farms Nursery knows a thing or two about growing award-winning Christmas trees. But when it came to shipping three trees to the vice president's residence in Washington, D.C., they turned to Holland!
As the Reserve Grand Champion at the National Christmas Tree Convention in August 2011, the Gobles, MI, nursery earned the privilege of presenting a Christmas tree to the people of the United States through its placement in the residence of Vice President Joe Biden. "It's an honor. There are a lot of great growers in the country and in Michigan," says Dan Wahmhoff, president.
Wahmhoff typically moves truckloads of trees throughout the country. "Getting three trees to Washington was a big burden. We didn't know what we were going to do. We've worked real well with Holland in the past, shipping seedlings and tree stands, and they were the first place we called. We were thrilled when Sandi Kiss came back with a solution."
On Nov. 17, three 10- and 11-foot Fraser firs were cut, banded and boxed. Holland picked up the fresh-cut trees and delivered them next day to Akron, where the shipment passed to sister company, YRC, for the remainder of the move and final delivery.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience
Sharon Schroeder could write the manual for good customer service. "I try to understand where the customer is coming from and put myself in their place. I do what I can, go the extra step, to make it better for them. Then I follow up. Customers know and trust me, and that's key when providing good customer service."
Sharon spends about 80 percent of her time working with customers, but as office administrator at the Tomah, WI terminal, she also handles payroll and works as the go-between with the home office on HR matters.
Starting with Holland in 1995, Sharon has been a billing clerk, worked in dispatch, and as an appointment clerk. "Sharon knows everything that goes on here," says terminal manager, Chris Larson.
She's quick to point out that customer service is the favorite part of her job, "I've talked daily or weekly to the same customers for years. I've gotten to know them, and we've developed friendships."
She also credits the stable workforce at the terminal for keeping those customer relationships strong, "We have a great team. We know each other and trust each other to do what's right for the customer."

A Place Holland Calls Home
If you're like 91 percent of Americans, your Thanksgiving table probably included cranberry sauce. We eat nearly 80 pounds of the berries (or 20 percent of production) just at Thanksgiving! With 50 percent of the cranberry crop coming from Wisconsin, Holland Headlines salutes Tomah, WI in the heart of cranberry country.
This city of 8,000 has been the site of commercially grown cranberries for more than 150 years. In fact, with more than 2,500 acres of cranberry vines, and a major processing plant in town, there's a good chance your cranberry cocktail and the dried cranberries used in your baked goods and salads had their roots in and around Tomah.
We've all seen the photos of cranberry marshes and naturally assume the berries grow under water. The vines are actually grown in soft peat soil. By flooding the marshes and churning the water, the berries detach from the vines and a pocket of air lets them rise to the surface for harvesting.

Institute of Supply Management October report
In its November Report on Business®, the ISM said October was the 27th consecutive month of expansion in the manufacturing sector, although the growth was at a slower pace (50.8 percent versus 51.6 in September).
The New Orders Index was up 2.8 points, suggesting a return to growth. The Prices Index was down 15 points to 41 percent. Inventories were down 5.3 points to 46.7.
According to Bradley J. Holcomb, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, " . . . Comments from respondents are mixed, indicating positive relief from raw materials pricing and continuing strength in a few industries, but there is also more concern and caution about growth in this uncertain economy."
Black Friday sales up 6.6 percent
According to retail data and consulting firm, ShopperTrak, sales for the day after Thanksgiving rose 6.6 percent over the same period last year, compared to a 0.3 percent gain in 2010.
The National Retail Federation reported that consumers spent nearly $400, on average, over the Black Friday weekend.
Market research firm, comScore Inc. says online spending on Black Friday jumped 26 percent from a year earlier. This suggests the distinction between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is blurring.
Housing starts up for October
In its November release, the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that privately-owned housing starts for October were up 16.5 percent (+/- 10.7 percent) over the 2010 rate.
Similarly, housing building permits were up 17.7 percent (+/- 3.4 percent) over last year.
